I've seen this behaviour on my GT2 Pro. I just tried it now (going to the main display and waiting until the AOD comes back on) but it didn't start bright and then darken. Then I did it again. This tie I turned on the main display by pressing the button. When the AOD turned back on it was, at first, dim, and then it brightened.
